Vitamin A and its Effect on Bone Health

Throughout your life, a process takes place in your body called bone remodeling, or bone metabolism. In this process, older, mature bone tissue is broken down and removed from your bones (through a process called bone resorption) and replaced by new bone growth (through a process called ossification). Bone remodeling goes on without you ever knowing it, feeling it, or probably ever thinking about it. And while your body does an amazing job forming new bone tissue, it’s still an excellent idea to care for your bones just like you would every other major system in your body. Getting enough calcium and vitamin D, avoiding tobacco, and getting enough exercise are all good steps to take for bone health. But one thing that can hinder bone remodeling and overall bone health is something that might surprise you—and that is taking too much vitamin A, which can have other disastrous consequences as well.
