Are Hormones to Blame for Poor Sleep Quality?
For the millions of Americans who suffer from insomnia, an over-the-counter or prescription sleep aid may seem like a quick, easy solution. Taking a pill before hitting the pillow may seem like an ideal fix, but it typically does not address the true root of the problem and may have many unpleasant side effects. While the causes of sleeplessness vary, from too much mental or physical stimulation too close to bedtime, excessive caffeine intake throughout the day, to worrisome thoughts and a restless mind, sometimes the true cause is hard to pin down. In treating patients, experts often uncover an underlying biological cause leading to poor sleep quality. An imbalance of hormones, for instance, is common. From hormonal shifts in a woman’s menstrual cycle to lowered testosterone in men, hormonal flux is to be expected throughout life.
