Dieting May Not Be Your Answer to Weight Loss
Humanity has had devastating epidemics before―cholera, influenza, smallpox, and polio, to name a few. While these epidemics tended to be communicable diseases, now we have a new kind of epidemic: obesity. In fact, the CDC reports that 70.7 percent of Americans are either overweight or obese. Previously, a body mass index (BMI) of under 25 was considered to be a normal weight. No more. It may be a healthy weight, but it’s no longer “normal.” What’s causing all this weight gain? The American diet has become more and more unhealthy, with more hidden sugar, empty carbs, and processed foods. And on the whole, people are far too sedentary. But too many people, especially those in their 40s and 50s, don’t realize that unbalanced hormones, including leptin, insulin, sex hormones, and growth hormones, may be causing body fat accumulation and sabotaging their weight-loss efforts.
